Root canal procedures are unfairly portrayed as highly invasive and painful procedures that are to be feared. Thankfully, in reality, root canals are common, straightforward, and essentially painless. There is, of course, some post-procedure care required to ensure long-term success. Fortunately, this process is also one whose simplicity and convenience will pleasantly surprise you!

Today, we’re delving into the details of the post-root canal recovery and offering tips for maximizing the procedure’s long-term effectiveness.

What’s a Root Canal?

During a root canal procedure, a tooth´s damaged internal ¨pulp,¨ which is comprised of blood vessels, nerve endings, and tissue, is removed in order to relieve pain and ensure the long-term viability of the tooth.

A root canal begins with the cleaning and numbing of the area surrounding the damaged tooth. Then, after drilling a hole to expose the tooth’s interior, using special instruments, a dentist removes the pulp and seals the empty space in the tooth with protective material, preserving the tooth’s structural integrity.

At this point, the root canal itself is complete. Quick and easy!

The process of ensuring the procedure’s long-term success, however, isn’t over.

Post-Root Canal Care

Post-root canal recovery involves a combination of rest, relief, and the management of some mild discomfort.

For a few days, expect tenderness in the treated area. In the majority of cases, this can be managed with a combination of saltwater rinses, cold compresses, over-the-counter pain medication, eating soft foods, and chewing with caution. Also, for about a week during this period, you will also be required to take antibiotics.

More than usual, it’s crucial during this time to maintain a robust oral hygiene routine that includes regular brushing and flossing. It is, however, important to keep in mind the tenderness of the treated area and ensure that you’re not too vigorous.

Typically, full recovery takes between one and two weeks, at which point you and your dentist can discuss long-term restoration options. These include simply sealing the opening with filling material or capping the tooth with a dental crown to both provide protection and restore functionality.
