Hosaka Family Dental is a one-stop clinic for all your smile needs, including restorative dentistry. Among our high-quality restorations are dental crowns and dental fillings. Many patients ask us which is better of the two, but it depends on the patient's needs. Ultimately, you will need to schedule an appointment with your Smyrna dentist to determine the best treatment based on your unique situation.

In the meantime, here is what you should know about dental crowns and tooth fillings at Hosaka Family Dental.

Dental Crowns in Smyrna, GA

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that cover a natural tooth down to the gumline. You can think of a dental crown as a shield of armor or a hard hat for a decayed, damaged, or vulnerable tooth. Crowns are very versatile as they can correct or improve several different functional and cosmetic issues.

There are many reasons why one might need a dental crown:

  • Protect a weak or brittle tooth
  • Restore a broken or severely worn tooth
  • Cover and support a tooth with a large dental filling
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a severely discolored or misshapen tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cap a root-canaled tooth

Dental crowns come in various materials, from metal alloys and porcelain to zirconia and E-max. Hosaka Family Dental offers all types of dental crowns, and we will help you choose the best material for your needs, goals, and budget.

What Does the Dental Crown Process Involve?

A dental crown usually takes two convenient appointments. First, we perform an examination and discuss your oral health concerns and needs. If a dental crown is right for you, we take an impression of your tooth and send the measurements and other details to our trusted local dental lab partners. At the lab, specialists create your tooth crown so it's perfect in size, shape, and fit for your smile. While they're busy crafting your restoration, we provide you with a temporary crown so you can still eat and speak with ease until your final crown is ready. It may take a couple of weeks to create your final dental crown.

When the final crown is back from the lab, we will ask you to return for another appointment. During this time, we will check to ensure it's comfortable and that you're happy with how it looks. At this time, we will make any adjustments needed. To place the final restoration, we gently reshape the natural tooth and use dental cement to secure the crown in place over the tooth. Finally, we finish the appointment with a quick clean and polish, so your smile looks as good as new!

Tooth-Colored Fillings in Smyrna, GA

Tooth-colored fillings are composite resin matched to the natural color of your teeth. Unlike silver amalgam fillings, tooth-colored fillings are metal-free and seamlessly match your smile.

These fillings have many benefits:

  • Attractive appearance – Composite comes in a wide range of shades, so we can perfectly match the tooth-colored filling to the color of your teeth.
  • Conservative treatment – Composite fillings bond to the teeth, so we do not need to remove healthy tooth structures like silver amalgam fillings.
  • Stability – Tooth-colored fillings are metal-free and don't expand or contract with temperature changes.
  • Patient preference – Though amalgam fillings are safe, many patients opt for tooth-colored fillings because they are free of mercury and metal.
  • BPA-Free – Our composite material is BPA-free and consists of microscopic plastic and glass particles.

What Is the Tooth-Colored Filling Process Like?

Your dentist examines your smile and determines the extent and location of decay. We then color-match the composite resin to your teeth so it looks natural and seamless. Next, we carefully remove the decay and bacteria from the tooth and fill the tooth layer by layer using the tooth-colored composite resin. We cure the composite resin as we go, so it's strong, durable, and stable for chewing and biting. When the tooth is rebuilt and restored, we polish it to look natural and shiny like your other teeth.

Caring for Your Dental Crown or Tooth Filling

Tooth crowns are designed to protect and strengthen teeth, but the underlying tooth can still get a cavity if food or plaque sticks beneath the crown or along the gumline. Also, teeth with dental fillings can still get cavities, further damaging the tooth.

Here are some tips for preventing cavities and maintaining good oral health:

  • Brush and floss regularly.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Speak with your dentist about using fluoride products.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid sugary foods and drinks.
  • See your dentist for routine dental exams and cleanings.
